Overview

Rajeet Parekh the founder of Chance, got in touch with me to help with his new startup. It's a dating app that matches people based on personality and interests, all while keeping things pseudonymous.

We started brainstorming and researching, and soon we had a plan to design and develop our product.

Research

Since the project was unique, we didn't have any background research to rely on, so we dove into primary research.

User interviews & surveys

User interviews & surveys

User interviews & surveys

More learnings from interviews:

• Hobbies, education, and location matter as much as looks for compatibility.

• Users worry about being recognized by family on dating apps.

• Fear of rejection stops people from asking for dates.

• Boys usually swipe through dating app profiles quickly without thinking a lot.

COMPETITOR ANALYSIS

COMPETITOR ANALYSIS

Choosing the right competitor is important!

Our Learnings:

• Photos to keep users engaged, but personalized matchmaking remains limited.

• OKCupid delves deeper into personalities, unlike other apps.

• Assessing compatibility in apps is hard without direct interaction.

Feedback loops

Navigating the feedback loop was initially challenging, but I enjoyed discussing the decision-making rationale with team members.

Be precise in your designs

Don't make developers guess how much padding and margins to use. Just specify the amounts so they don't have to do your design work.

We did that!

I'm proud of my ability to research, design, and run usability tests in three months while working only 20 hours per week as a student.
